The Berrien County Historical Commission was formally established in 1967, but it wouldn't be until 1975 that its mission to save and open to the public the 1839 Courthouse became a reality. While tours and minor programming occurred prior to the 1975 season, the focus had been on the preservation needs of the building and how the public could help finance such a project. But when the BCHC opened for the season in April 1975, local paper "The Journal Era" noted that the renovations were nearly complete and that the BCHC was opening brand new permanent exhibits on the first floor of the Courthouse.
These key milestones, along with the arrival of the 1830 Murdock Log Cabin in 1973 signaled that the BCHC was ready to move on to its next chapter - the keeper of the county's history. As such, the Commission officially changed its name to the Historical Association. In partnership with the property owners, Berrien County, the BCHA has worked diligently to steward the historic Courthouse Square along side its mission to collect and preserve artifacts from the county's history.
A lot can happen in fifty years, with the staff and board of this small, but mighty organization withstanding economic downturns, global pandemic, fires, and even live bombs. And the the current staff is working diligently towards the Courthouse Square's next chapter in an ever-changing world. But that isn't stopping the BCHA from taking a moment to celebrate such an important milestone for the museum. Post-COVID, many small museums like the Courthouse Square did not survive, making this anniversary even more special.
The staff has a lot planned for 2025 to celebrate both the history of the museum AND the history the museum preserves. While there are many ways to enjoy the celebration, the BCHA is hoping to celebrate with a special $50,000 fundraising goal. 100% of your 100% tax-deductible donation will go towards the museum's maturing organizational needs - all of which ensure that the BCHA's mission to give a home to every story possible - including yours!
The Berrien County Historical Association is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization as defined by the IRS. Donations to the museum are tax-deductible.
