In 1967, the Berrien County Historical Commission was formed to save and renovate the 1839 Courthouse.  The following year, after receiving their 501c3 status and the county’s purchase of the building, the fundraising and renovation began in earnest.

In 1974, with the addition of the Murdock Log Cabin and indications they may be able to reunite the Courthouse Square through strategic purchases, the BCHC re-established as the Berrien County Historical Association.  The following year, in 1975, it was announced in the local papers that the renovations were nearly complete and that after three years of hard work and fundraising, the permanent exhibit space inside the lower level of the Courthouse was now open to the public.

Over the next 50 years, the purchase of the Sheriff’s Residence (1975), the opening of the Murdock Log Cabin (1975) and its garden (2000), the creation of Bennett’s Forge (1978), the construction of the Jail Plaza (1990s), and the purchase of the Records Building (1980s) united the Courthouse Square and created the largest historic site in the County.

Since 1975, the BCHA has been a vital hub of history, heritage, and culture for Berrien County’s residents and visitors.  Along with property owners, Berrien County, the BCHA continues to modernize the museum’s offerings to ensure the interpretation of its past.

In 2025, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the museum, the third longest use of Courthouse Square in the history of the property.  To help us celebrate, we encourage you to give the gift of the future through a donation to the museum.  Every dollar given to the museum is 100% tax deductible and 100% invested in the work our staff does every day to make sure your story - our story – always has a home.
